• Owner Chip Wallach recently opened a TOPZ Healthier Burger Grill, known for air-baked, never-fried areo fries, onion rings and 100-percent Angus chuck burgers. Hours: 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; Sunday 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. 15025 Lancaster Highway in the Old Lancaster Highway Shopping Center.

• Wonder what happened to Pedros's on Independence, which became Cactus Rose in Matthews? Mike Purser and Ralph Osornio (formerly the cook at Pedro's) have opened Mexicali Rose Restaurant, 1510 Concord Ave. in Monroe, 704-282-4499. Lunch specials are under $6.75 and dinners under $7.45. Hours: 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday.

Reid's Fine Foods is celebrating its 80th birthday and its 10th year at Seventh Street Station by giving away prizes and offering discounts through May 31. Additionally each Saturday, they will award a special product, such as a Reid's gift basket or Wine Club membership.

Owners James and Renee Bazzelle are also celebrating 10 years of creating their Low Country and Gullah cuisine at Mert's Heart and Soul, 214 N. College St.


Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. through June 5, GW Fins' patio will have New Orleans jazz and food and drinks specials. A crawfish eating contest will be held Thursday, June 12 with a grand prize of a seven-course dinner for four at GW Fins' exclusive Chef's Table -- a $400 value. GW Fins, 525 N.
