With the SouthPark roster of grocery store chains growing with the addition of Whole Foods later this summer, locally owned Harris Teeter's flagship store at Morrocroft (6701 Morrison Blvd.), also known as the Taj MaTeeter, has almost completed renovations to the ready-to-eat area. This section now includes an expanded hot and salad buffet lines, more varieties of pizza by the slice, and additional deli and bakery items, including local brands.
For cheese aficionados, the Morrocroft cheese counter now includes an affinage, or curing, case for some soft cheeses. None of these cheeses are local, though. To find those, go across Sharon Road to Earth Fare (721 Governor Morrison St.) or to area farmers markets.
Also at the Harris Teeter affinage cheese counter is a labeling system that includes a taste description, origin and type of milk — sheep, cow or goat. Some tags also recommend a wine match. This Harris Teeter also makes mozzarella on-site daily. Although there are no certified cheese mongers here, manager Steve Tully says the employees who sell cheese have taken classes through the corporation. Currently, this is the only Harris Teeter with this expanded selection of cheese, and management is evaluating which cheeses to reorder and which lines to drop.
Nearby, Dean & Deluca (6903 Phillips Place Court), also undergoing renovations, has had a full line of hard and soft cheeses since opening in Charlotte — which is not surprising since the store started life in the early 1970s as a Manhattan cheese shop. The varieties of cheeses here include those from Neal's Yard Dairy, the stellar British farmhouse cheese maker.
