The Native Americans of Florida’s east coast exploited the resources of the Atlantic Ocean for centuries before European contact. Following the arrival of Europeans, they employed those same maritime skills to acquire shipwrecked goods, castaway peoples, and even parts of the shattered ships that washed ashore. They then modified and used such materials, and also traded them with other indigenous peoples, the Spaniards of St. Augustine, and passing European ships.
