As a way of honoring Chilean songstress and artist Violeta Parra, director Andrés Wood created 2011’s Violeta Went to Heaven, a film that tells the condensed story of Parra’s life. The film gives recognition to Parra’s contributions in the world of folk music, visual art and Latin American culture as a whole. It also puts a personal spin on Parra’s devotion to the arts and the struggles she faced despite her success. Parra’s bouts with poverty and her intense romance with Swiss flutist, Gilbert Favre — eventually leading to heartache and suicide — are documented in the touching flick, which picked up World Cinema Jury Prize at 2012’s Sundance Film Festival. Violeta Went to Heaven screens at Mint Museum Randolph as part of the Latin American Coalition’s ongoing CineMas Latino Film Series. In Spanish with English subtitles.
