Treacherous Love: Passion and Vengeance in 18th century France

When: Sun., April 28, 3-4:15 p.m. 2019

The musicians of L’Académie du Roi Soleil are delighted to present two rousing cantatas by Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre and Louis-Nicolas Clérambault featuring classical heroines Semele and Medea. Soprano Margaret Carpenter Haigh, described as “fiery, wild, and dangerous” with “a talent for character portrayal,” will relate the powerful accounts of two women, united by fire across the chasm between heaven and hell. Presented alongside these dramatic cantatas are electrifying works for solo violin and continuo by Jean-Féry Rebel, played by nationally-acclaimed baroque instrumentalists Cynthia Black (violin), Gail Ann Schroeder (viola da gamba), and Nicolas Haigh (harpsichord).
