Too Beautiful for Words

The song "Too Beautiful for Words" from the Broadway musical The Color Purple is sung by Shug Avery (Elisabeth Withers-Mendes) as a thank you to the downtrodden Celie (LaChanze), and it is a symbol of the characters' burgeoning relationship. It's also an accurate description of the overall feeling of the story that began as a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. You don't watch The Color Purple, you experience it, regardless what form it takes: novel, musical and especially film. Naturally, everyone remembers the film and how it jump-started the career of producer Oprah Winfrey and launched her most famous quote: "You told Harpo to beat me." Charlotte's Blumenthal Performing Arts Center (BPAC), as a member of the Independent Presenters Network, another producer, has planned a Tony Awards party to celebrate the musical's 11 nominations (second highest behind The Drowsy Chaperone). The 60th Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS (local affiliate, WBTV 3), Sunday, June 11 starting at 8pm. BPAC will host its party that night in the Booth Playhouse at 7:30pm. Dress code is casual to this free event, which features light refreshments, a cash bar, prizes and a sneak preview of the 2006-2007 season.
