Davidson Community Players takes a trip back in time to 1964 and the early days of the civil rights movement with its latest production, Violet. Based on Doris Betts' short story, The Ugliest Pilgrim, the play -- with a book and lyrics by Brian Crawley and music by Jeanine Tesori -- revolves around a scarred girl named Violet. After deciding to leave North Carolina and head toward Oklahoma in hopes of meeting a famed TV evangelist and become enlightened, Violet crosses paths with a young African-American soldier. As a result, this encounter proves to be the ultimate learning experience. $15-$18. March 14, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.; March 18-20, 8 p.m.; March 21, 7 p.m.; March 25-26, 8 p.m.; March 27, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m.; March 28, 2 p.m. Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St., Davidson. 704-892-7918. www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org.
