A distinguished professor of history at Queens, Dr. Robert Whalen will deliver this fall's Preyer Lecture. His talk, "Murder, Inc. and the Moral Life," explores the New York gangsters, their famous trials in 1940 and 1941, and the continued impact on politics, imagination and the public conscience. Dr. Whalen is a former N.C. Professor of the Year, a recipient of the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award, and author of four books, including "Assassinating Hitler: Ethics and Resistance in Nazi Germany." The reception convenes at 6 p.m.; the lecture is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
