In 1985, playwright Neil Simon turned his male-centered 1965 Broadway play The Odd Couple into a female-friendly update. Now in production at Theatre Charlotte, this version finds two mismatched female roommates — an uptight neat-freak and a disorganized, easygoing mess — hosting a shindig at their home. The narrative is mostly the same as the original, with the exception of the characters' names (Felix and Oscar become Florence and Olive) and minor gaming adjustments (Trivial Pursuit replaces poker). Oh yes, and the macho, testosterone-fueled argument of the original is transformed into a shrill cat fight. The message, however, remains the same: maybe it's better to live alone.
