The Morning After

Start your own Breakfast Club

Looking for an eatery after a late night? Some of the breakfast spots that are normally open, such as John's Country Kitchen, Eddie's, and Izzy's, will be closed on New Year's Day. But others -- including hotel restaurants -- will be doing business as usual, albeit delayed.

If you want that slice of pineapple coconut cake to start the year right, Landmark will open at 6 a.m. on New Year's Day. This great eatery never seems to get the press that others do -- and their food is better. Landmark has been a late-night favorite of the arty types. If talking is out of the question, people-watching is an evolved sport here because the dining room typically holds a random assortment of Charlotteans.

Landmark Diner, 4429 Central Ave., 704-532-1153. Hours: 6 a.m. until 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. until 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday; Sunday 6 a.m. until midnight.

SouthPark's longtime favorite breakfast club, The Original Pancake House, will open their doors at 6:30 a.m. on New Year's Day. The rush occurs around 8 a.m. on weekends. You'll find the usual eggs, pancakes, waffles and omelets on the menu. OPH has a coffee shop ambiance with a lively atmosphere. The newly relocated OPH on Charlottetown tends to be a bit noisy (not the best environment for a hangover.)

The Original Pancake House, 4736 Sharon Road, 704-553-8364, Hours: 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. weekdays; at 7 a.m. on weekends; 915 Charlottetowne Ave., 704-372-7099. Hours 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

In South Charlotte is the Flying Biscuit Café, a pork-free, whimsical eatery offering biscuits with most courses. They will open at 7 a.m. New Year's Day.

Flying Biscuit Café, 7930A Rea Road (StoneCrest Shopping Center), 704-295-4440. Hours: Sunday through Thursday 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The 60-year-old Copal Grill is still open but exists in the shadow of having the state pull the plug, since the property was purchased for additional airport access. One co-owner reported that they plan to be open on New Year's Day from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. All menu items are made in-house.

Copal Grill, 5923 Wilkinson Blvd., 704-392-2241. Hours: 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily.

Zada Jane's in Plaza Midwood will open at 9 a.m. on New Year's Day. Not only can you enjoy healthy selections after an evening of debauchery, but you can also begin your 2008 resolution to exercise daily by playing shuffleboard out front. Their breakfast menu is served all day; lunch menu begins at 11 a.m.

Zada Jane's Corner Cafe, 1601 Central Ave., 704-332-3663. Hours: Monday through Friday 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.; Sunday 9 a.m. until 4 a.m.

Toast will delay their opening until 10 a.m. on New Year's Day and will only serve breakfast from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Lunch service will start at 11 a.m.

Toast Cafe, 100 Huntersville Concord Road, Huntersville, 704-875-7840. Hours: Monday through Friday 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.; brunch Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

When in doubt, IHOP is the 24/7 perennial favorite. Charlotte has several locations.
