Remember back in 1995 when Tamia "Put A Move On [Your] Heart," then declared that she was "So Into You" because she was looking to fill the vacancy left by the "Stranger In [Her] House"? I talked with Tamia recently about her new album Between Friends:

What was the process like making this album compared to the last three?
It was definitely a learning experience because I approached it in a completely different manner. I released it independently on my own label (Plus One Music Group) [just wanting] to create songs that really spoke to me. I just vibed in the studio. It really just creatively happened on its own.

Why did you name the album Between Friends?
Shep Crawford and I went into the studio [to create]. We went to South Africa, so I got a chance to perform some of the material and we knew were going in the right direction. And then, Rodney ("Darkchild" Jerkins) called, so it really was just out of friendship that the album came about. So, I wanted it to reflect that.

What was the inspiration behind your song, "Too Grown For That"?
It's just about going out and having fun, not necessarily looking for someone, but just looking to have a good time.

What's the best advice you've ever received from a friend?
In this business, the best advice you can give anyone is to stay true to who you are because that can get lost in the shuffle of everything. If you believe in something, stay true to it, follow it through.

Tamia will be performing at Tempo, 4809 Wilkinson Blvd., tonight at 9 p.m. More info at: www.tempocharlotte.com.
