Shen Yun 2013

When: Sat., Jan. 26, 7:30 p.m. and Sun., Jan. 27, 2 & 7:30 p.m. 2013

Here in the States, conservatives can be viewed as radicals. Same in China, though you might wonder how the explosion of color and graceful dancing that is Shen Yun 2013 could possibly offend Beijing. This spectacular flowering of traditional Chinese dance does, in fact, have a rebellious edge, declaring on its website that the "spiritual core" of the culture they are perpetuating "has been all but completely demolished" by communist rule. So while the dancers, the dances and the eye-popping props and costumes from bygone Taoist and Buddhist dynasties might seem the antithesis of offensive, the troupe isn't a genial goodwill gesture. The outlawed Falun Gong, officially labeled a "cult" in China, sponsors the tour. Knowing that is probably the only way you can feel wicked watching the outwardly apolitical performances of Shun Yun with its 100 performers and 400 costumes.
