The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s recent inspirational exhibit, Giacometti: Memory & Presence, was dedicated to Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss master of 20th-century modernism. A fascinating facet of the extensive showcase was that it featured so many works from Giacometti’s ever-changing styles: early pencil and ink drawings; paintings; surreal cubist sculptures; figures and busts. A group of 17 Mallard Creek High School students were taken to visit the exhibit, but there was a catch to the field trip: They had to examine each Giacometti piece in detail and then use the same techniques to create their own self-portraits. Currently these self-portraits, some of which might make Giacometti himself proud, are on exhibit at Central Piedmont Community College.
