Rusted Root, Von Grey, Funk Rush

When: Mon., Nov. 18 2013

Not yet in their 20s, Atlanta-based sister act von Grey fuses blistering bluegrass chops with winsome alt-pop and country-folk melodies — think Alison Krauss belting teen angst emo while fronting the Dixie Chicks. Dubbed “Mumford & Daughters” after their beguiling sets on Conan O’Brien and Letterman, the four siblings have also been likened to Taylor Swift. Such comparisons do von Grey a disservice. Classically trained, the sisters have been playing since childhood, mastering and fusing warm harmonies, intricate chamber-quartet compositions, fiery Celtic-folk and heartfelt Civil Wars-style Americana into a perky-yet-pensive ball of energy that leaves Mumford’s ersatz hillbilly schtick in the dust. Likewise, von Grey’s current experiments with electronics, idiosyncratic song structures and global lyrical concerns suggest they have scant interest in sharing Swift’s pallid pop princess bubble. Yet von Grey is not a precocious freak show. The sisters seem to love the directness and immediacy of pop, and their desire to connect with the listener is palpable. What may be the pinnacle of many artists’ careers is simply the starting point for von Grey. (Pat Moran)
