BG Metzler has lived in Plaza Midwood for more than 10 years. She said the old trees and welcoming nature of the neighborhood's residents drew her in. That's why she left her old stomping grounds of Stonehaven to build her new house in Plaza Midwood.
How would you describe Plaza Midwood?
Plaza Midwood is just a wonderland of wonderful people, diverse neighbors, engaging neighbors and just a lot of people who care. One thing about Plaza-Midwood is the trees and the vegetation. It's just so old and so much about it [is] engaging. You feel comfortable walking. And it's so close to the city, you can't beat that at all. That's definitely something we like.
What is the most eye-catching landmark in your neighborhood?
The park: Midwood Park. We have a brand-new bandstand, and it's very eye-catching. We've been working with Parks and Recreation, and they've been wonderful.
What are the top three places to shop in Plaza Midwood?
Oh my goodness, it just depends on what you're looking for. I really hate to answer that because there is so much diversity of shopping in our neighborhood. You can find anything from antiques to novelty items, and that's what I like about it.
Top three places to eat?
For family fare, Dish is great. Lulu's is always written up. We have Creation. They're just all great, and the international restaurants up on Central Avenue are all great, too.
Top three party spots?
Here again, it depends on what you're looking for. We have the CAST theater where they do wonderful plays. The comedy theater at the Graduate, and Thomas Street Tavern is always voted one of the best neighborhood pubs in Charlotte. There's just so much to see and do.
What's a little-known fact about your neighborhood?
I'm on the board of the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood, and I would have to say that we have one of the best crime prevention committees in the city. They do a super job working with the city, and we get a lot of people asking to do things because of the job they do.
Where is the first place in Plaza Midwood you would take a newcomer?
Probably to one of our restaurants for lunch or dinner. And the beauty is that you can walk, which we often do.
How has the recession changed your neighborhood?
It's a little more challenging to sell a house, as it is in every neighborhood. People are cutting corners a little bit, as in any other neighborhood. I don't think we've been affected more than any other neighborhood.
Why should people move to Plaza Midwood?
They should move here because people are out, they are running, they're walking, they're riding their bikes. There is a lot of diversity of what people do and where they come from. Everyone that I know, they're made to feel very welcome.
Name one downside to living in Plaza Midwood.
No, I can't. We just enjoy it.
