Nightlife profile: DJ Ghost

The Scorpio has been a part of Charlotte's nightlife scene for a long time, and since January 2004, DJ Ghost has been its resident DJ. "My goal every time I DJ is to have the majority of people in the club on the dance floor," he says.

Creative Loafing: What's the story behind your DJ name?

DJ Ghost: When I first started DJing, I was trying to come up with something catchy and as funny as it sounds, Casper came to mind — bald head, white dude. And I had heard someone call me that at some point. But I didn't really like Casper; it was too "friendly." And then Ghost popped in my head, so I went with it, and it worked.

Is there something about the crowd at Scorpio you don't find anywhere else?

At Scorpio, I get an energy level from the crowd I've never experienced anywhere else. And as a DJ, you need that energy from the crowd to really give it your all. I love that, even though it is a gay club, everyone comes there to party. I love looking out that DJ booth and seeing all races, gay, bi-, straight, transgender partying and having a good time and feeling accepted.

Do you consider yourself an artist or a service provider?

I consider myself an artist, but also a service provider. I feel that I am creating a soundtrack for everyone's party each night. And since I mix live, not with a computer or just playing a long mixed CD, it's kind of like walking the tightrope. You have to keep the balance, making sure you don't slip up. What song I choose next is a split-second decision, and it takes concentration and accuracy. It's very exciting. I don't like "trainwreck" mixing, where the transition makes no sense. So I won't be mixing fast songs and then immediately switch to a slower one. I think it needs to be a gradual progression. A lot of people don't understand that, but I think it's part of why I've been successful.

Who's on your iPod playlist or in your car CD player right now?

Right now, what I have been listening to the most is the new Toni Braxton CD, Pulse. I'd have to say that's my favorite CD out now. And of course I am always testing out my mixed CDs, to see how they sound in the car, or tracks I'm considering for the club.
