An Illinois town is shaken up by a melancholy yet attractive stranger, Tilly, whose aura of sweet sorrow causes others to fall instantly in love with her. When Tilly becomes happy, havoc ensues. An on-stage cellist accompanies the story with emotionally resonant musical numbers.
