Lotus Fights Breast Cancer

Carleen Shankle shares her personal connection

It shouldn't be a surprise to see various organizations right now trying to raise awareness about breast cancer. After all, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. But it might be a surprise to see that Charlotte's local boutique Lotus is doing its part as well.

If your eye is automatically drawn to pink, now is the time to head to any of the four Lotus locations (Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Phillips Place, Birkdale Village). Everything pink is 20 percent off, including pink jewelry.

Carleen Shankle, head stylist at the Civilian Phillips Place location, will participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which will be held Oct. 20 to raise money for research on finding a cure for breast cancer. The proceeds from Lotus' pink sale will go toward the $1,800 she's trying to raise.

"We're really promoting that women need to be aware of the disease, that it's out there," Shankle says, "to know your body and to know that it's OK to be aware of what's going on with your body in reference to cancer."

For Shankle, this is more than just a volunteer opportunity. "My mother survived breast cancer after going through chemo treatments and radiation. She's a two year survivor."

"We're showing everyone that we can offer so much more than just fashion. We want people to come out and recognize what we're doing," Shankle says. "It benefits them as well. We have a great sale going on, and pink is a hot color this fall."
