Living Love in Wartime: NC Quaker Service During WWI

The Selective Service Act of 1917 and U.S. entry into World War I provided a quandary for individuals holding deep moral objection to military service. Both in the U.S. and Britain, conscientious objectors were at risk for persecution and imprisonment. Quakers in North Carolina were among those advocating for another way and promoting service through civic engagement and peaceful international relations.
