Juicy J, Project Pat

When: Mon., April 7 2014

I can travel the world and probably never have memories fonder than riding around Beatties Ford Road when I was 14 or 15, five-deep in a Mazda 626 with a friend who just got his driving permit, windows down and blaring Project Pat’s album, Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin’. For kids of a certain era, few artists were more quintessential to growing up in Charlotte than Project Pat. Along with Three 6 Mafia, the Memphis rapper soundtracked major life events like getting your driver’s license, piling in a car to roll to the club or preparing for your first illegal activity. His clever and accurate depictions of the South permeated our life. People talked like him, got gold grills like him and even approached early relationships with his not-so-sustainable advice on how to handle women. Some music never leaves a bubble. The Memphis rapper may never get his due, but his loyal following of devotees in cities like ours will always make him feel appreciated. (Mike McCray)
