When viewing the works of local abstract artist Carmen Neely, you have to read between the lines. Her paintings overlap with contour lines, shapes and colors of all sorts. Chaotically placed on the canvas, some are decipherable while others rely on interpretations alone. Her latest solo exhibit, Illusions and Realities — at Women Centered Art — analyzes women's bodies and sexuality. It wrestles with the contexts of being understood through exploitative and/or empowering tactics. Influenced by the constant bombardment of sex symbols and mass commercialism, it examines how society-drilled ideals can skew our perceptions of what we see, believe and feel about ourselves in relation to others and, more importantly, in our own skin.
