In Bruno Dumont’s 2011 film, Hors Satan, the lines of good and evil are a little blurred. Set in a coastal landscape of northern France, Dumont decided against adding sound effects and left much of what is heard by the viewer to nature. Lead characters, simply identified as “The guy” (David Dewaele) and “The girl” (Alexandra Lematre), have an age gap and a relationship that’s more than a little complicated. Though the girl — a goth teen who fled the home where her stepfather abused her — seems to desire the guy, the guy shows little romantic interest in return. The film touches on the complexities of human nature, animal instincts and notions of right and wrong. The mysterious drama, which premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, is a follow-up to Dumont’s Hadewijch, a successful 2009 flick about a young Christian fanatic who wants nothing more than to devote herself to loving Jesus.
