HEAVEN

Featuring members of the Comas and Dean & Britta (Matt Sumrow), Snowden and Adam Franklin (Mikey Jones), and Fan-Tan (Ryan Lee Dunlap), New York City’s Heaven takes elements from all those acts to create its own brand of modern psychedelia. The band’s debut was released this summer and hews true to those compass points: layers of dreamy textures built on synths and keys, guitars alternating between melodic lines and Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz and feedback, and insistent slo-burn tempos that occasionally ignite into crescendo conflagrations. There’s also some ’80s new wave in here, most notably in the trio’s stated fondness for the Psychedelic Furs and John Hughes’ films. But Heaven radiates a far cooler and more adult vibe than the latter, one that’s suffused with late-night, Lower East Side bohemia rather than sunny SoCal teen angst, or even the hipster-chic of the band’s Brooklyn home base.
