Theater/Dance/Performance Art

Hairspray

When: Sat., Nov. 16, 7 p.m. 2013

Down in Ballantyne, there’s a new force, the OnStage School of Performing Arts, that’s emerging in Charlotte’s already super-rich teen theater scene. For one-night-only, the teen scene coalesces at McGlohon Theater as the high school talent pool presents Hairspray. The 2003 Tony Award winner for Best Musical takes us back to Baltimore at a time when afterschool TV dance shows ruled the music scene, high-rise bouffant hairdos obscured the skyline, and tacit segregation kept doo-wop and R&B discreetly in the background. Plump and plucky Tracy Turnblad is going to change that, pursuing a slot on the “Corny Collins Show” and her crush on rocky Link Larkin, even if her mom Edna zealously steals scenes from her every groovy step of the way. “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” are the big ensembles, but there is plenty of bonding and a gooey teen romance in between a cluster of showstoppers like “I Can Hear the Bells,” “Big Blonde and Beautiful,” and “I Know Where I’ve Been.” (Perry Tannenbaum)
