Grand Opening of Romare Bearden Park

When: Aug. 30-Sept. 1 2013

It’s not just a park ... it’s a work of art. The Romare Bearden Park, opening on Labor Day weekend with a three-day festival, is structured around the notable N.C.-born artist. There are art pieces, a section called “Paris Memory” that has a Parisian vibe (Bearden spent time in that city, too), a fountain and lawn area, and other areas suitable for concerts and exhibits. Events are already slated to begin, including a Bearden Music Series that kicks off on Sept. 28. To get properly acquainted, come out for the grand opening, which features a variety of performances by local talents, including music from the Jazz Arts Initiative, spoken word from Quentin “Q” Talley, aerial performances by Carolina Calouche and more. The Mint Museum Uptown and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture will also be offering special tours of some of their exhibits.
