KARL DENSON’S TINY UNIVERSE

Karl Denson lent his expansive sax talents to Lenny Kravitz for his early albums and the tours supporting them. After departing the Kravitz camp, he formed the jazz dance faves Greyboy Allstars. Denson’s been on the jam-band circuit steadily since the mid-’90s with Tiny Universe, his ensemble of seasoned musicians. Few souls within listening range can keep their toes from shuffling along to a mix of jazz, blues and funk when KDTU cranks up and gets the stage thumping. Of course, there’s plenty improvisational interplay interspersed into the jams. Denson’s comprehensive work in the past quarter-century, including his solo material, has all converged into marking him a top saxophonist, as well as a fluid vocalist and flutist, ably taking the sinewy sax into any genre he pleases.
