Film: Re:Generation

When: Thu., Feb. 23, 7 p.m. 2012

When five ground breaking DJs and producers – DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method – are asked to collaborate, write and record a song that bounces up the music streamline by fusing distanced genres like hip-hop and country, you’d better bet the results are going to be interesting. The outcome and the tedious process is pegged in the new documentary Re:Generation, which screens at AMC Carolina Pavilion on Thursday, Feb. 23. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, the film takes an interesting angle at reinvention on the music front. To give you a taste: DJ Premier scored a classical song after conducting the Berklee Symphony Orchestra, while Pretty Lights (aka Derek Vincent Smith) was challenged with the walloping task of formulating a country song with bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and country songstress LeAnn Rimes.
