The Irish are not a bunch of drunken eejits who run around searching for leprechauns. If you think that, then you've got it all wrong. Celebrate true Irish heritage at the Charlotte Irish Summer Festival. The two-day event will feature music from Irish folkies the Dublin City Ramblers, Celtic rockers The Young Dubliners and former member of the Hickory-based band Airspace, guitarist Jimmy Brown & The Badly-Loved, among other artists. There will also be traditional Irish dancing, sports (a cornhole tournament, Gaelic football game and hurling exhibition), children's activities, food and, well, there's no forgetting the Irish beer. Free. Friday, Aug. 8, 5 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 9, 12 p.m. Tyron Street (between Trade and 5th). www.charlotteirishsummerfestival.com.
