This is the debut of a biweekly column focusing on the great and cheap food finds in Charlotte, written by culinary students in CL food critic Tricia Childress' Introduction to Food Writing class at Johnson & Wales University.
I have been in college for almost three years, and I have been broke the entire time. I guess it's not unusual to hear about a college student who never has any money, and because of that, I feel the need to share the greatest discovery I have made in the city of Charlotte. I like to call this place My Bank Account's Only Friend, but to others, it is known as NIX Burger & Brew.
NIX isn't like most burger places I have ever been to. It's a little hole in the wall in Uptown Charlotte and the best kept secret around. They offer close to 20 different burgers, and having gone there almost twice a week for three months, I can honestly say they are all heavenly.
Although these burgers are tantalizing to my taste buds, by far the best aspect to NIX is their daily specials. Every day from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., they offer their already cheap burgers for half price. Their burgers generally cost about $9, but for those two hours, the burgers cost around $4 or $5. Where can you get the most delicious burger for four bucks? What college student, scratch that -- what person wouldn't love a deal like that?
NIX is open daily from 11 a.m. until late. They are located at 201 N. Tryon St., but be careful -- if you blink, you might just miss the best deal around.
