CL previews upcoming shows



Lucinda Black Bear This N.Y.C. act cites Sparklehorse and Elliot Smith as influences, and while Christian Gibbs' songs don't attain those lofty heights, they do fit the general mold: haunting minor-key melodies, lush arrangements where texture is king, and romantic narratives with a down-the-rabbit-hole bent. Cello and violin accents highlight last year's 'Capo My Heart' and Other Bear Songs, which was voted Most Innovative by NPR's All Songs Considered. Rehab The Georgia-based group offers up a variety of styles on their latest release, Grafitti The World – from the Kid Rock-esque "Bartender Song" to the melodic "Last Tattoo" which could fit in 311's repertoire. The band fuses hip-hop with rock, but not in that '90s nu-metal way. There are hints of Sublime and Eminem in its sound, as well. No surprise that they'll be hitting the road with Kid Rock after this solo tour. Amos' Southend (Jeff Hahne)


Black Tusk Savannah's Black Tusk are a three-piece thrash outfit, but don't be surprised to hear a little Thin Lizzy, Hawkwind, or Skynyrd in its sound, especially as a bridge to the heavier stuff. There's real melody here, even though it often gives way to hammer-of-the-gods detuned/D-beat power riffage come time for the "chorus." Add in a little Master of Puppets-era gothic structure and a dab of Hatebreed-eque hardcore, and you have quite the intoxicating brew. With Boolow & Stronghold Crusader. Milestone (Timothy C. Spindrift Having clearly digested too many Sergio Leone films (though you could argue there's no such thing), this L.A. ensemble made up of Brian Jonestown Massacre refugees and Warlocks members claim to front a "new psychedelic western revival movement" – their rock 'n' roll spaghetti western, The Legend of God's Gun, suggests they're dead serious about it, too. All slinky reverb guitar, stacked harmonies, and high-desert atmosphere, just about the only thing missing is Eli Wallach's sneer and Clint's squint. With Babyshaker and Bullship. The Spongetones and The Doughboys Charlotte favorites The Spongetones are still rocking after 30 years. The band is currently performing to support their latest release, Too Clever By Half, and is already at work on their 12th disc. The Doughboys are out of New Jersey and started roughly four decades ago. Frontman Myke Scavone fronted the '70s band Ram Jam ("Black Betty"). That's a helluva lot of years of talent to be sharing a stage. Visulite (Hahne)


S. O. Stereo North Carolina rock quartet's music is melodically rife with a touch of Coldplay, a dash of early R.E.M. and even a helping of Dave Matthews, but the band's harder edges and songcraft pull it out of their predecessors' shadows. Vocalist Bradley C. Davis' singing has a potent range and the emotions in the words seem genuine. No need to save this stereo, the music speaks for itself. Evening Muse (Samir Shukla)

Attila's Honey Charlotte's Attila's Honey plays Americana, bluegrass and folk that's firmly rooted in traditional picking and singing, without forgetting which century we're in. Call it porch-front music that's as feisty whether heard lazing on the porch sipping iced tea or shaking noggins guzzling a cold brew at a favorite watering hole. Blueground Undergrass Now 10 years old, the Jeff and Johnny Mosier-led Blueground Undergrass have managed to unite both grassheads and jambanders alike with their "sonic wall of twang." There's a little of the late, great Southern band Sea Level in here too, along with some jangly/Django-esque jazz riffage. If all that sounds like The Avett Brothers, it ain't: BU are somewhat lighter in both sonic and emotionally delivery, though both bands have more stores of energy than a just-fed camel. Beres Hammond Jamaican Hammond has crooned his soul-touched voice for over three decades singing ballads, rocksteady, roots reggae and dancehall. Hammond has remained essential with his wide-ranging recordings, some misses but many hits. If you want an evening of Al Green meets classic reggae riddims, then this is it. He's touring in support of the upcoming new disc, Moment in Time. Also on the bill are Morgan Heritage, Dubconscious and Hope Massive. Neighborhood Theatre (Shukla)
