Cibo Matto’s first chapter was short, but colorful: The duo of Japanese ex-pats emerged with a surrealistic sound and a hodgepodge of trip-hop, breakbeats, lounge jazz and Shibuya-kei J-pop — but burned out quickly, announcing a hiatus in 2001. Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori re-banded this year and issued the whip-smart and whimsical concept record Hotel Valentine. Avant-garde guitar hero Nels Cline, who’s married to Cibo Matto’s Honda, guests.
