Sadly, and I do mean sadly, Kandia Crazy Horse, the former music editor for the Loaf has fled the South and returned to New York City. So we sent her off with a party at the name-fitting club Crazy Horse ... despite the fact it's a strip club located in BFE on Independence, conveniently next to The Red Door, Adam and Eve, and the gay club Skandalos. It's literally a strip mall, a one-stop "sin" shop; kinda like Charlotte's Bourbon Street. The practically empty titty bar that charged $10 for a martini played mainly '80s music, and I hate to say it but watching the strippers dance to it wasn't like watching Tawny Kitaen dance all over the hood of a car like in Whitesnake's video. But we enjoyed singing along to the '80s songs nonetheless -- that, and watching Kandia get a lap dance from the only hot stripper working that night.
Holy Hockey Puck!
That's what I screamed every time a hockey puck, or hockey player for that matter, came slamming up against the glass (and practically my face) while attending my very first hockey game at the Bobcats Arena last Friday. I went to the Charlotte Checkers game for their '80s night where I sat rinkside near a Billy Idol impersonator. I haven't seen the arena that packed since its last sold-out concert; there were more fans present for the Checkers than at a typical Bobcats game -- at least, it looked and sounded like it. And I don't know a thing about hockey, but there was so much going on during the game to keep even the most hockey illiterate spectator (me) entertained. Fans went all out for the '80s theme with crimped hair, side ponytails, and aviator glasses -- deriving a costume for this game is perhaps the only good thing about leggings coming back in style. Meanwhile, there was Chubby (the mascot) four wheeling across the rink, a hairy chested Garfield, cute Checkers girls who baffled me by dancing on ice and people trying to throw rubber pucks into the sunroof of a car driving around the rink. I even made the jumbo-tron for doing the chicken dance along with everyone else in the arena. And after the game, fans along with Billy Idol, headed to the official after party at The Breakfast Club where it's '80s night every night.
If nothing more than the experience, check out the Checkers ... they have so many promotions, philanthropies and themes coming up I can't keep track of them ... such as wet your whistle weekdays ($2 Bud Lights), Hooters happy hour and bar crawls with LazyDay and Elevate, Pink in the Rink for Breast Cancer awareness and Dunk-A-Lawyer night.
