Books for b-ball fans

• College basketball fans can take their pick among several new books covering Carolina teams: University of North Carolina Men's Basketball Games, North Carolina State University Men's Basketball Games, Duke University Men's Basketball Games, and Wake Forest University Men's Basketball Games (McFarland Publishing, each $49.95). These books contain box scores, stats, and tournament records for every game that the teams have played since 1953. Fans of these ACC outfits can also look up the scores and averages of their favorite individual players. A true basketball fan, Michael E. O'Hara has compiled anthologies for almost every team in the ACC. This is great to have on hand to win sports trivia bets! To order, go to or call 1-800-253-2187.

• In her second book, A Broom of One's Own: Words on Writing, Housecleaning and Life (Harper Perennial, $13.95), North Carolina author Nancy Peacock examines what it means to be a writer. Peacock explores the dedication that is necessary to perfect a craft. She uses her own experiences as a writer, cleaning woman, bartender, carpenter and locksmith to demonstrate the lengths aspiring authors should go to follow their dreams. In this collection of essays, she uses her laid-back, conversational style to offer advice on motivation, craft and criticism. Follow her journey as she cleans from house to house, meeting all kinds of people and finding her voice along the way.
