Stop the presses and stop the traffic! Dancing in the Street breaks out at North Tryon, Thursday and Friday, beginning at noon in front of Spirit Square and boogying down the Queen City's main drag until 2 p.m. Besides bedeviling motorists, the free display of dance companies and choreographers serves as a colorful come-on to the 2nd Annual Charlotte Dance Festival. Yes, indeed, the Festival includes ticketed indoor events: most notably, a Dance Charlotte! potpourri (Sept. 6) of emerging companies who survived a rigorous pre-Festival adjudication process, a visit from Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company (Sept. 7-8), and an Aerial Dance Concert (Sept. 14-15). There's another generous freebie for the people on September 8, Dance in the Open on the Ray's Splash Planet lawn, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with a performance from Moving Poets refugees Echo Arts at 3:30. All ticketed events are at Booth Playhouse, with reservations handled at www.carolinatix.org. Times, locations and prices vary. For complete details, go to www.charlottedancefestival.org.
