Blacula

When: Tue., May 8, 7:30 p.m. 2012

"He's black! He's beautiful! He's Blacula!" So read one of the original taglines for 1972's Blacula, one of the best-known — and one of the simply best — of the countless blaxploitation films that were immensely popular during the 1970s. Starring William Marshall as an 18th century African prince who gets bitten by Count Dracula and, two centuries later, rises to terrorize Los Angeles, the movie serves as the opening title in the new monthly series SWEET! The Blaxploitation Film Series. Created by former CL editor-in-chief Carlton Hargro and CL photographer Jasiatic, the event will surround the screening with music and door prizes. Although the movies will be selected on a monthly basis, Hargro has hinted that upcoming titles might include Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Black, Disco Godfather and Black Belt Jones. No word yet on whether Blacula's 1973 sequel, Scream, Blacula, Scream, will be among the chosen.
