There have been times in the past when Charlotte Repertory Theatre struggled to define what it was about. Now we don't even know who they are. Rep's upcoming season is a new nadir. Two of their shows can be previewed in the North Carolina mountains this summer and a third sets a new standard for thrift. If you have a half-dozen barstools, you can supply the complete scenery for The Exonerated. Of course, you can't supply the big name stars like Amanda Plummer, Richard Dreyfuss, Ben Vereen, Jeff Goldblum, Kathleen Turner, or the host of others that attracted theatergoers to The Exonerated when it played Off Broadway and around the country. Rep won't either. Financially and artistically, the company is treading water, and their clueless trustees seem to be holding their breaths on naming a new artistic director as long as possible. Glub.
