Never one to back away from controversial fare (that'll be the year!), the Back Alley Film Series has chosen to book Beyond the Black Rainbow as its July feature. Despite being dismissed by some scribes as an atrocious film, this effort from newbie writer-director Panos Cosmatos has struck a chord with presumably more adventurous reviewers, earning heady comparisons to the trippy works of David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Cronenberg. Set in the early 1980s, it employs psychedelic visuals and a midnight-movie sensibility in relating the story of a sadistic doctor (Michael Rogers) and the teenage girl (Eva Allan) he pursues after she escapes from his asylum.
