“Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” springs to mind in regard to artist Betsy Birkner’s decorative armored sculptures. Birkner constructs and then adorns the contemplative clay pieces, which explore concepts of identity through the lens of Birkner’s Southern upbringing. Shining light on common societal expectations and stereotypes with pieces such as “I Should Be Skinny,” “I Should Be Nice” and “I Should Be Sexy,” she examines culturally sanctioned recipes for a woman’s success. “I Should be a Good Catholic” is comprised of a ceramic armor adorned with lotus seeds, Austrian crystals, linen and lace. We see power through the gold-leafed chest plate and frivolousness via the overwhelmingly frilly pink lace bib. Pam Winegard’s paintings, which focus on human relationships and ties to space and place through the use of architectural imagery and mixed media, are also included in the exhibit. (Anita Overcash)
