ANTHONY DAVID
The first time I saw Anthony David, I wasn’t old enough to get it. I thought I did. I had a great time. But only recently has the truth of his music begun to take shape for me. The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter is probably best known for love songs. There’s something sultry and soulful about them, with his Southern sensibility being the icing on the neo-soul cake. But it just feels lazy to call David’s music “neo-soul.” It’s grown folks’ music and I wasn’t grown when I first discovered it. I hadn’t moved away from home and my family. I wasn’t longing for those little moments you don’t think you’ll miss when you hit the road. I hadn’t learned that while Charlotte felt like the city, to everyone I meet outside of North Carolina, I may as well be a farmer. I get it now. I’m happy to know there’s music for people who understand being a Southern man is different, and growing up can be beautiful. (Mike McCray)
