Andreas Bechtler, The Artist & Memento

When: Dec. 14-Jan. 30 2013

If you want to probe into the artistic mindset of Andreas Bechtler, a patron of Charlotte's lavish modern art facility Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, here's your chance. Bechtler, himself an artist of note, grew up in Switzerland around some of modern art's most renowned figures, so we're pretty sure he learned a thing or two. Currently, he has two solo exhibits. The first, Andreas Bechtler, The Artist, is showcasing at UNC Charlotte's Projective Eye Gallery Uptown. In it, Bechtler has included abstract photography of both altered landscapes and strangely arranged figurines — an unusual, yet captivating current in his works. The second, Memento, is at New Gallery of Modern Art. It also features photography, but of drastically different subject matter. It includes shots Bechtler took of glitzy storefront windows in New York City. Turn your trip to the exhibits into a crawl by making a final stop at the Bechtler Museum, where you can see his portion of his family’s impressive art collection. Andreas Bechtler, The Artist: Free admission. Exhibit continues through Feb. 27. UNC Charlotte’s Center City Building (Projective Eye Gallery), 320 E. Ninth St. 704-416-0252. www.coaa.uncc.edu. Memento: Free admission. Exhibit continues through Jan. 30. New Gallery of Modern Art, 435 S. Tryon St., Suite 110. 704-373-1464. www.newgalleryofmodernart.com.
