The Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray launched her solo career in the early 2000s with the one-two punch of Stag and Prom, two albums of intensely personal and political punk delivered with an unvarnished, down-home approach. Ray’s latest set, Goodnight Tender, keeps the stripped down esthetic, but switches the sonic template to back porch, rawboned country. If anything, the new sound amps up Ray’s yearning activism by spotlighting her earnest, fine-grained vocals.
