What can a former professional basketball player turned fitness expert tell you about food that you'd actually want to know? Well, for starters, that the words "healthy" and "delicious" can go hand in hand. Sonya McRoberts is the professional trainer responsible for some of the best bodies in the city. Her popular training studio Sonya's Fitness (130 West Blvd.; www.sonyasfitnessinc.com) has now expanded to include A'sonji Cuisine, a full line of organic and wholesome meals that can be ordered, prepared by a personal chef and picked up once a week. A'sonji Cuisine solves the dilemma over what to eat by offering the public the same healthful meals that helped McRoberts become a champion.
Creative Loafing: So you're a trainer, but let's be honest, do you ever eat food that tastes really good?
Sonya McRoberts: I'm always saying to myself, "Eat healthy, look good." If you eat healthy, you're going to feel healthy; it's as simple as that. If you go out to eat and have the filet mignon, the baked potato, the salad and the bread, that's doing too much. But if you have the filet and the salad, you're gonna feel great. I was raised in the country and we gardened, so there were always fresh vegetables and fruits around. Yes, my mother did cook fried chicken, but even then, I never really had the desire for certain foods, and I guess that's carried on to adulthood. I'm not saying I never eat a burger because I do; it's just not that often.
What made you decide to expand from just fitness into food?
A'Sonji means self-love, and that's what I had in mind when I created my menu. I believe the food you put into your body has a lot to do with the way you feel about yourself. Once you get into a person's psyche and peel back the layers of generational bad habits and learned behavior, most times you discover there's a lack of self-love. People are also just not educated. They want food and they want it fast, but they're not thinking about the ingredients in the foods they consume. I created A'Sonji to make that part easier. The foods are amazing. The taste is unbelievable. It's all organic and it's fast.
What's the best advice you'd give to calorie counters who want to eat healthier?
It's just like any kind of addiction: You have to be realistic and take things one step at a time. You have to remember to plan your meals because it's always quicker to run out to a fast food place. But if you plan, that makes things easier. Also, when you're in the grocery store, stay on the outside aisles — this way, you avoid sugary foods, chips and junk. The outside aisles have all the essentials: milk, fruit, protein. Follow those tips, and you'll be satisfied, plus look and feel great.
