3 questions with dietician Erin Pesta Jones

It's true — many diet foods taste like cardboard. So, wouldn't it be wonderful to snack on tasty treats without being bogged down by regret? Local dietitian/nutritionist Erin Pesta Jones says you can eat what you love as long as you eat in moderation. In college, Jones decided to become a dietitian in order to better assist her family and friends. Her father was overweight due to occupational stress, and during her sophomore year of college a friend suffered from anorexia. Jones' personal motivation might have driven her to pursue a career in food and nutrition, but her family and friends aren't the only ones benefiting from her knowledge.

Creative Loafing: Have you always eaten healthy?

Erin Pesta Jones: I have always loved my fruits, veggies, dairy and dessert. My three favorite foods have always been cheese (any kind), chocolate and peanut butter. I was the frustrating child that always ordered chicken nuggets and had cheese and ketchup as a snack. Anything with "chunks" in it made me gag. I have finally outgrown my food texture fears and I love trying new foods. My siblings nicknamed me "Succotash" because I would always finish my mixed veggies at the dinner table with no complaints, unlike them.

Are there times when you slip up and eat a "sinful" meal?

Depends how you define "sinful." I strongly believe there are no true "good" and "bad" foods but that most foods should be eaten in "moderation" for optimal health. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy fats, but you can very easily overdo the avocado. I encourage my weight-loss clients to have that one splurge meal a week to fully enjoy food and eating, in general. ... I practice what I preach, to answer your question: I enjoy pizza, pasta, fish, tacos, etc. It is all how you prepare it, the sides you offer and portion size.

Are you active?

My husband and I work as a great team and encourage each other to meet our individual and team goals. We ran our first marathon the last day of our honeymoon after a week in wine country. We toured Indianapolis on our second marathon. We love the runner's high and the sense of accomplishment. We're proud to improve our times and do it for fun. I have been a Girls on the Run coach at McKee Elementary for two seasons now and love the nurturing environment we have instilled for these beautiful and talented 15 third to fifth graders.
