You may remember in April, Lupe Fiasco told the crowd at his UNC Charlotte show he'd have a release date for his next album by the next week. Last night, via Twitter, the rapper announced that his long awaited album, Lasers, is done and waiting on Atlantic Records to release it.
The tweet, which was posted around midnight said,
This is just the latest setback for his third studio album. In a February 2010 interview on Australian radio, the rapper said he'd submitted the album to the label and noted that the waiting game was "one of the sadder parts of being on a major record label."
Changes have been made from the title of the album to it's actual release date. Originally slated for a 2009 release, Fiasco initially planned to retire after it's release. His deal wouldn't allow such a move so he changed the name of the album from LupEND to The Great American Rap Album, which eventually became We Are Lasers then just Lasers.
Thankfully Fiasco didn't ruin his fans' night completely. He went on to say his side project, JC (short for Japanese Cartoon) would still be coming out "fo' free" "like soon as hell."
That album, In The Jaws of The Lords of Death has also seen it's setbacks but is entirely under his control. Buzz for the rappers' indie rock band, side project started in January 2009 after singles from the project leaked, over a year later, it was scheduled for July 4, 2010 release but technical issues with the website, allsabotage.com, pushed that date back as well.
Fans hope it's release will get the ball rolling on his official album's release date. Fiasco did thank fans and confirm that their outcry wasn't falling on deaf ears at Atlantic. As far as his previous side projects go. I think we've all given up on Child Rebel Soldiers, and have no clue what's going on with his most recent one, All-City Chess Club.
