Time was, Circa Survive was cool in my book. Back in 2005, they were making the kind of dark, melodious alt-rock that was the perfect soundtrack for disaffected young white people like me to smoke pot to while sitting around, feeling ennui. By all appearances, they've kept it up since then. But where their debt to hardcore and emo used to be apparent, they've now replaced it with a poppier sensibility, albeit one that remains a little dark. Singer Anthony Green's tenor is sung in a lower register, at a slower tempo, resembling nothing if not Linkin Park's Chester Bennington. It's pretty trite and uninteresting stuff, but there are still plenty of college freshmen sitting around stoned in their dorms, needing something to feel discontent to. Circa Survive still fits the bill. With Minus the Bear and Now Now. $31. March 22, 8 p.m. The Fillmore, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-549-5555.
