Re: “The Great Gatsby: Novel approach mars novel adaptation

Thanks for writing, dsync. Actually, I have read the novel (more than once), and yes, I am among the millions who think it's a classic. I'm sorry it remains a surface read for you, though.

Also, while the book did indeed receive less than stellar reviews upon its release (though not quite "universally panned" as you claim), it enjoyed a resurgence during the war years (WWII), well before the "hipster beatniks."

Cheers!

Re: “The Great Gatsby: Novel approach mars novel adaptation

You apparently haven't ever read the novel. I suggest that you do, its smugness and emptiness is precisely why it was thought of as trash and why it was universally panned by critics when it was released. It took hipster beatniks to find any meaning in it at all, and they somehow deluded the rest of you into thinking it held some deep meaning about the human soul.

It doesn't, and neither does the movie. A bad book, becomes a bad movie...though at least the movie was visually appeasing.

Re: “Oprah 'It Girl' chooses JCSU

Thank you for this article Emiene. Mpumi's plans to return to her homeland to give back exemplifies the message President Obama gave at More House about a week ago. Also I am glad you mentioned the struggles of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy because Mpumi is an example of why we must continue to push forward even in the midst of challenges. I am glad Oprah didn't buckle under the scrutiny of society and the media because if she did our city would not have been graced with such a beautiful young woman as Mpumi.

Re: “A different type of DADT

Don't ask, don't tell is a terrible idea. Marriages are not built on monogamy, they are built on trust. If other people are invited to participate in your sex life it must be with the express permission of your mate, and your mate has the right to know about every instance. "Don't tell" is cheating. The fact that your mate knows you cheat doesn't change that. If you don't want to know, then you have not really given permission, you are pretending it's not happening. That will be a burr under your saddle for a very long time.

Re: “CL debuts sex columnist

Becky, Okay so let's visit the theoretical side of sex! Correct me if I am wrong but, it is safe to say "theoretical". Being able to speak openly about what we think a person should be feeling as a result of a "sexual act" is theory. Not to discredit the Teaching. Meanwhile know what has happen lead up to a "sexual act" or is happening during a "sexual act" is another story. Congratulations on your position as a sexologist. good luck with that. I do hope that you are able to relate to "the down and dirty" and "the nitty to the gritty". While you understand the theory, I challenge you to understand the Actual!

Re: “Jezebel star has Bette Davis eyes, nothing else

That drag queen looks more like Carol Channing's grandmother than Bette Davis EVER looked- even after her stroke. I think that talented drag queens could pull this schtick out of the mire, unfortunately all CLT has to offer is a bunch of tranny pageant queens trying to look real (an artform?). Oh, and Roxy Morecox. However, I don't see Bette as a Baritone.

Re: “Live review: Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Belk Theater (4/1/2013)

I saw their concert in Utrecht on may 18. There was no opening act, Emmylou started at 20:15 'till 23:00 with a small break. Accoustics in the theatre were fantastic, every nuances in their voices could be heard. The best concert I ever attended.

Re: “Dixie's Tavern closes, land to be used for park

Your headline and article make it sound like the building will be demolished to make room for the park, but it won't. The building will remain and be renovated to accommodate a new (maybe more than 1?) tenant. There are renderings of the renovations with some of the park renderings that look quite nice.

Re: “Are the Avett Brothers America's last great rock band?

I've tried to like the Avett Brothers; really, I have. They seem to be all the rage...like pop country from Nashville. Sure, some of the lyrics are good, it's just too bad you have to wade through all of the whiny, over stressed vocals and music that sounds like someone trying to remember what a MTV reality show soundtrack would be with a banjo.
