The civil rights lawyer thwarted racist Southern rage throughout his lengthy career, which included arguing and winning eight cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Regardless of the retaliation he received for standing up for equality, including having his home and office fire-bombed, Chambers was a humble man of justice. He died in August.
