The 2011 follow-up flick from Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, who received a Golden Globe nomination for 2003’s The Return, is a thriller about a family in crisis. In Elena, married couple Vladimir and Elena turn against each other over money and whose children should get what portion of their wealthy estate, built by Vladimir’s business ventures. Elena’s child from a previous marriage, who Vladimir sees as a freeloader of sorts, wants to use the money for educational purposes, but Vladimir stubbornly pushes for giving his money to blood, a daughter he is no longer even in contact with. A winner of Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard prize, the film screens as part of the Charlotte Film Society’s Saturday Night Cine Club. In Russian with subtitles.
