Did you get new tech for the holidays and now your old tech is laying around? What other options are available besides reselling? There are plenty of ways to get rid of old tech besides shipping it somewhere.

1) Regift it - One thing Gazelle does have correct is that if the item is sitting in a drawer gathering dust, it's not doing any good. Younger people often don't have tech or the money to upgrade what they already have. Why not give it to a local kid (after you get parental permission, of course) or younger relative to use?

2) Craigslist it - Price compare with other people selling the same item(s) and list your own competitively. Sure, your email will blow up with people wanting to give you $5 for that old iPhone 4S but somewhere in the madness you might make a decent dollar once you filter the cheap-o emails out. 3) Donate it for the tax write-off - Goodwill or Salvation Army will issue you a receipt for your donation. It's a little late to get the 2013 write-off, but if you hold onto the ticket, you'll be able to get the write-off for this year when you file your taxes next year.

4) Recycle it - Both Staples and Best Buy accepts old tech, both large and small, for recycling at no charge. If you don't want to give it to Best Buy for whatever reason, e-Stewards can help you find a responsible e-recycler in the area.

5) Trade it for something else - Best Buy will check your item to see if it has trade-in value and if not, will recycle it for free. You can exchange for store credit to get something else if it does have value. Another option is to trade with someone you know. True story: I know a guy who bought a VW bus for cash plus an old iPhone 3G. With this option it takes a bit of creativity, but you get the idea.

6) Give it away - Area 15's Free Store is my recommendation on where to just give something away to people who need it.

7) Resell it - Of course, there's nothing wrong with Gazelle or any other reselling service. Here are a few more: , SellMyOldTech, or my favorite, the ecoATM. This thing takes your old phone and spits out cash. Charlotte has eight of these around town.

Whatever you do, don't throw it away. There are so many other ways to positively exfoliate tech out of your life, there's no reason to junk up the landfill with it. Technology piling up and sitting around is annoying! Get rid of it! You'll be happy you did.
